The Metropolitan School District of Washington Township is a fully authorized International Baccalaureate World School K-12 district. Having hosted the International Baccalaureate Diploma Program for more than 20 years, the District has extended the International Baccalaureate (IB) to all students, making it the first district-wide IB program in the state of Indiana.

A 21st century education includes knowledge of traditional core subject areas as well as a focus on global mindedness, contemporary global awareness, economics, health & environmental understanding. Students need to learn the core subjects and must also apply their knowledge to understanding and solving real-world challenges. This often occurs through the inquiry approach to teaching and learning. Inquiry classrooms address the required state mandated academic content – but these classrooms, through guiding questions from the teacher, help students gain a deeper understanding of concepts.

All seven Washington Township elementary schools are International Baccalaureate Schools. The Primary Years Program (PYP) benefits ALL students in grades K-5 and focuses on developing the whole child inside and outside of the classroom. The focus is to develop each student as an inquirer, problem solver and a lifelong learner. The core subjects are reading, writing, social studies, math, science, arts, and physical education. All students are exposed weekly to a world language of either Chinese or Spanish. For additional information about PYP, visit: www.ibo.org/pyp/
